The Second Coming

The Second Coming is a two-player cooperative 2D shooter Windows xp game written in Microsoft’s XNA using the Torque X engine.  The game was programmed for a game design and development class (fall semester of my junior year) by myself and another student, while art and audio assets were created by another classmate.  The class lectures focused on the overall design of games (what makes a good game) and the software engineering practices behind the gaming industry while the actual learning of C# and the XNA environment used in creating our games was left up to the students.  At the end of the semester all of the groups in the class presented their games to a packed lecture hall full of faculty, students and most importantly two Microsoft MVP’s.  The MVP’s, Andy Dunn (creator of several XNA starter kits) and Chris Williams judged all of our games, giving The Second Coming the highest score.

The Second Coming was my first attempt ever at creating a true video game and was quite the learning experience, especially considering that at this point I had only ever had two introductory programming courses in Java. It is a real testament to the power and usability of Microsoft’s XNA framework and even C# and .NET. Please note that .NET 2.0 SP1, XNA 1.0 refresh, and DirectX 9.0c are all required to play The Second Coming (XNA 1.0 refresh redistributable is included- please see the directory to which the game installed). Unfortunately since the game was created with (now) relatively old components, it is not an ‘easy’ task to update the project to Visual Studio 2008/XNA 3.0 and I have not had time to track down an old copy of VS Express 2005 for rebuilding and repackaging. As such, the version contained in this installer will most likely only work on 32bit Windows XP. Updating this may be a future project…
