When beginning college I was solely a Biochemistry degree seeking student. This field encompassed almost all of the natural sciences and mathematics which appealed to my broad range of interests. While spending so much time in academic labs and working for several years at a biological research laboratory for the University of Maryland, I realized that science was more of an intellectual interest of mine. I greatly enjoy reading scientific journals and reading articles and books on various aspects of the natural sciences (a hobby I continue to this day) but I was not meant to work in a ‘wet lab’. I did however find a field, Bioinformatics, which combines knowledge from both of my majors. I took a course in bioinformatics during college where I was able to use my skills both as a programmer and scientist to develop some interesting applications. I really hope to get some time soon to pursue at home “basement science” that utilize techniques derived from the DIY Bio and Open Source Science movements. I am trying to work out a research topic using Pearl Biotech’s open source gel electrophoresis box.
